Faith in action for Aug. 31

August 31, 2012
By the Rev. Don LeClere , Marshall Independent

Marshall Evangelical Free Church

The Marshall Evangelical Free Church sent a team of 12 youth and adults July 12-26 to serve the poor in the Dominican Republic. Each team member completed 12 weeks of training for this trip. The mission included a brick construction project for offices of the Adonai Ministries Cooperative. This ministry trains people in biblical financial stewardship, helps them save their money and grants qualified individuals small business loans so they can get off the street by starting a business of their own. This is a holistic approach to the needs of the poor which has proven successful. The Marshall team worked for two weeks building offices for the cooperative to make this ministry possible. The Adonai Cooperative is now fully functional in helping people get off the streets into viable jobs.

When construction ended each day, different ministries began. The team was trained in puppetry to teach Bible stories and lessons to the children. Later, the team had a workshop to train the Dominican nationals in puppetry. We then donated the puppets and the stage for a new ministry in their local church.

Teens and young adults gathered for sports outreaches. The Marshall team conducted one baseball outreach and two basketball outreaches. Games and friendly competition ensued with a time at the close of each event for team members to share their story of personal faith in Jesus Christ.

When evening came there was a ministry repeated in various churches and communities that involved the showing of the Jesus film. Team members would be selected to share their story of faith followed by the showing of the Jesus film. After the film there would be an opportunity for people to place their faith in Jesus Christ. We were delighted by the positive response to the film and the number of people who made personal professions of faith to Jesus Christ. In the larger cities, people knew a lot about Jesus but struggled in their marriages and parenting. In these situations, we showed the film "Courageous" to show the relevancy of a personal relationship with Christ in dealing with marriage and the parenting of children.

One of the continual things that we hear about our mission trips is how much the team members were encouraged and ministered to by the nationals. The team members go to serve but find out they were the ones who were served. The joy and humility of the Dominicans at Adonai Ministries has made a lasting impact on our team members. Everyone who went testified as to how their lives were forever changed for having gone.

Jesus said in Matt. 28:19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations." The Marshall Evangelical Free Church has had the joy of obeying that command by sending out individuals or teams on 75 trips all over the world since 1984. To God be the glory!!
