August 30, 2012
By Chris Hmielewski , Marshall Independent

Hello Mustang Fans!

Today, we begin another chapter in Mustang athletics.

Four fall sports begin competition as football, soccer, volleyball and women's golf are all competing to close out the week. The SMSU Athletics Department will have two additional teams competing this fall with the reinstatement of women's and men's cross country. The SMSU cross country team will compete for the first time on Sept. 14 as they run in the South Dakota State Classic.

SMSU soccer opens the 2012 regular season at home on Friday against Nebraska-Kearney, beginning at 3 p.m. at the Regional Event Center. The Mustangs will then go on the road for a non-conference match-up against the Huskies of St. Cloud State on Monday, starting at 1 p.m.

The Mustang football team will open the 2012 season tonight hosting No. 2-ranked and preseason Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference favorite Minnesota-Duluth to begin the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schedule. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. at Mattke Field at the Regional Event Center.

The SMSU volleyball team begins the season ranked No. 6 in the country, and will open the 2012 season at the Wildwood Lodge Volleyball Classic hosted by Concordia-St. Paul this Friday and Saturday. The Mustangs open the tournament at 9 a.m. on Friday against No. 10 Hillsdale (Mich.) before squaring off with Regis (Colo.) at 4:30 p.m.

Fact Box

Hoofprints Trivia Question

Who was the SMSU cross country head coach during the 1990 season?

The first person to email me at MustangHoofPrints@SMSU.edu with the correct answer to this question will receive an SMSU t-shirt.

On Saturday, SMSU will close out the tournament with a match against No. 20 BYU-Hawaii at 1:30 p.m.

The Mustang women's golf team opens its 16th season of competition this weekend with a dual match on Saturday and Sunday, and a triangular on Monday. SMSU will face Minnesota State-Mankato in a 36-hole dual on Saturday and Sunday afternoon in the Mustang/Maverick Roundup. The first 18 holes of the dual will be played on Saturday at the New Ulm Country Club, starting at 1 p.m., while the final 18 holes will be played on Sunday at the Marshall Golf Club starting at noon.

On Monday, SMSU will travel to Sioux Falls (S.D.) to face Augustana and the University of Sioux Falls in an 18-hole triangular at Bakker Crossing Golf Course. The first tee time is set for 8 a.m. Head coach Ross Webskowski, in his ninth season, has 11 players on this year's roster, including nine returning letterwinners from last season's team that finished fourth at the NCAA region tournament.

As always, the SMSU Department of Athletics and the Mustang Booster Club have a full schedule of events for you and your family this fall. Next weekend, the Mustang Booster Club will host the Mustang Shootout, brought to you by the Marshall Radio Station and Shooter's Sporting Clays on Sept. 8. On Sept. 15, SMSU Athletics will host the 6th Annual Ag Bowl, brought to you by Ralco Nutrition, Inc.

On Saturday, Oct. 6, SMSU will host Homecoming and the 3rd Annual Mustang Stampede. On Oct. 7, the SMSU Department of Athletics will host the Celebration of Excellence, honoring our student-athletes for their academic and athletic accomplishments of the 2011-12 athletics year.
