For the first time in 32 years, Southwest Minnesota State University has a cross country schedule.
Nate Wolf, SMSU's head cross country coach announced the program's schedule on Tuesday. SMSU will open their season on Sept. 14 at the South Dakota State Classic. The Mustangs will have two weeks off before traveling to Mound to compete in the Gale Woods Invite on Sept. 28.
Minnesota State-Mankato will host SMSU on Oct. 6 as part of Caty's Run. The Mustangs finish their regular season the following weekend at the Martin Luther College Invite in New Ulm.
The first Northern Sun Intercollegiate meet for the Mustangs will be Oct. 20 in Minneapolis. If it qualifies, SMSU would travel to Joplin, Mo. for the NCAA Regional meet on Nov. 3.
Both the men's and women's programs were reinstated as a varsity program on June 18, making the schedule the program's first-ever at the Division II level.
SMSU's men's cross country program enjoyed a 22-year run from 1968 until its suspension after the 1990 season. The 2012 season will mark the beginning of the third incarnation of women's cross country at the school, where Mustang women competed from 1979-1984 and 1986-1990.
