SMSU women’s tennis wins academic awards

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association has announced that Southwest Minnesota State is one of 67 NCAA Division II schools to earn the ITA Team Academic Award for the 2011-12 academic year.

Three SMSU student-athletes, Allison Niedert, Maria Lindberg and Thuy-Dung Nguyen were recipients of the ITA scholar-athlete award.

To earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a student must be a varsity letter winner, have a grade point average of at least 3.5 for the current academic year and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters. The ITA All-Academic Team award is given to programs that have a cumulative team grade point average of 3.2 or higher.

Niedert, a freshman from Madison, S.D., had a 3.54 GPA in elementary education. Lindberg, a junior from Perham, had a 3.85 GP in elementary eduction. Nguyen, a senior from Sioux City, Iowa, is a culinary major with a 3.89 GPA.
