Mudcats 1-1

at Gopher Classic

In Day 1 of the Gopher Classic Legion baseball tournament in Minnetonka, the Marshall Mudcats went 1-1, beating Oakdale 8-3 before falling 1-0 to Excelsior.

Against Oakdale, Marshall pitcher Riley Carpenter dominated on the mound, striking out 10 in a complete-game victory. Carpenter also sparked a six-run fifth inning with a two-run double. Aaron Mathiowetz kept the Mudcats going with another double. Mason Schnaible also got in on the action, going 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.

Against Excelsior in Game 2, Marshall's offense sputtered as the team managed just one hit, a single by Schnaible in the third inning.

The Mudcats (6-14 overall) play three more games over the weekend, starting with Shakopee on Saturday morning. Marshall ends the tournament with two games Sunday, against Omaha-Papillion (Neb.) and Cheyenne (Wyo.).

Milroy Irish 3

The Milroy Irish's struggles continued on Friday, as the team fell 7-3 in a non-league game to Sacred Heart at Irish Yard.

Leading the Saints' offense was Chris Potter, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Matt Johnson added three hits and a run scored.

Dominic Dolan paced the Irish's offense, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Derek Riley finished with a pair of hits and a stolen base.

Starting at 2 p.m., Milroy (11-16 overall) hosts Mountain Lake and Pipestone for a pair of make-up games. The Irish end the regular season on Sunday at Tracy.

Long Sox 10, Sleepy Eye 1

The Lamberton Long Sox clinched their 10th straight Tomahawk East League championship by taking down Sleepy Eye 10-1 Friday in Lamberton

The win moves the Long Sox to 21-4 overall and 17-2 in league play.

Shane Schoborg earned a complete-game victory for Lamberton, striking out two batters, walking one and allowing six hits.

Tyler Reiner led the Long Sox offensively, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Johnny Pistulka also had three hits and knocked in a run. Lamberton's Mike Samyn added a multi-hit game of his own as he went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.

John Mangen was 2-for-4 to pace the Indians' offense.

The Long Sox return to the field Sunday with a home game against St. James.
