Murals, murals on the walls

THUMBS UP: The cool thing about the mural project that will culminate with a trio of colorful murals on display by next year isn't just the covering up of a few bare walls as much as it is the personal touch behind the murals. The music version incorporated live models, residents of Marshall, who posed for a panoramic photo that was transformed into the first of the eye-catching murals. The third mural, which will be completed in 2013, is sports-themed and uses the same idea. Four people from the area will be worked into the mural in some fashion by artist Terrence Fogarty, giving the product a rich personality many murals lack. It's clear a lot of thought was put into these murals, and whether you're big on art or not, you have to appreciate the outside-theibox thinking that was put into this project.

FDA approves weight-loss drug

SIDEWAYS THUMBS: We're not sure what to make about the Federal Drug Administration's approval of the anti-obesity drug Belviq. On one hand, the drug could very well turn out to be a potent device to help fight the growing problem of obesity in our country. It could very well be the breakthrough drug we're all looking for, the magic potion that will make us eat less and make fat disappear. On the other, we wonder if yet another weight-loss drug will make our society even more reliant on pill popping to lose weight and therefore skip eating properly and exercising regularly. The battle against obesity shouldn't be fought by drugs alone. We, as a society, need to remember that the best way to fight obesity is by eating right and getting off the couch.
