To the editor:
The authors of "Don't reinforce society's prejudices" wrote, "Scientific research has led the medical and psychological community to recognize that being gay, lesbian, or bisexual are normal sexual orientations."
With all due respect for those who study the science of the mind, the Creator of the human body speaks of such sexual behaviors as "unnatural" (Romans 1:26-27). God asks that we honor His desires rather than our own.
We can best show our love for our neighbor by "speaking the truth in love" (Ephesians 4:15). "We love because He first loved us." (I John 4:19) and "sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins." (I John 4:10)
Communication promotes understanding, so I thank the two persons who wrote, "Response to same-sex issue" and "Don't impose your beliefs on others" (5/22/12) God's forgiveness of our sins is indeed the good news of the Bible. What is sin? Who defines sin? Today the word "sin" has been replaced by the word, "choice." It is interesting that stealing, or shop lifting or setting fires are actions that are still considered wrong or "not acceptable." Why? People might answer, "Because they are actions that hurt or cause pain to other people."
God tells us that His "heart was filled with pain" when He saw "how corrupt the earth had become" in the days of Noah and so He sent a world-wide flood. (Genesis 6:1-13) Our sins cause God pain. That is important to consider.
Later in Genesis, God speaks about "the grievous sin" of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 18:20) This was the practice of homosexuality. Angels, appearing as men, come to Sodom to rescue Lot and his wife and two daughters because Abraham asked God to spare them. Lot was Abraham's nephew. Lot's future sons-in-law do not leave Sodom because they think Lot was joking about God destroying the city. (Genesis 19)
God does not want sin to thrive. He is happy when we repent of our sins and waits and watches for us as the father of the wasteful son watched for his son's return and celebrated when he did in the parable Jesus told about our heavenly Father's love for us.
How is marriage defined in the Bible? Jesus said, . . ."at the beginning the Creator made them male and female (Genesis 1:27) and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'." (Matthew 19:4-5). Jesus was quoting Genesis 2:24.
One of the public forum letter writers asked if Jesus said anything about homosexuality. Jesus referred to the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah when He sent his disciples out to tell people, "The kingdom of God is near." He said some towns would not welcome them or listen to God's Word. "I tell you the truth,"
Jesus said, "it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town." (Matthew 10:15)
I do not write to lead anyone to inflict God's judgment on evil doers, but rather to lead others to know God's plan for our salvation and what His will for us is.
Hopefully, our nation is thankful for the many blessings God has given us and will seek to follow God's version of what is true and right as recorded in the Bible. It is not my beliefs that I wish to share, but God's, and to share God's words of lasting freedom and happiness. Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free." (John 8:31)
