Schools can thrive regardless of size

To the editor:

A vibrant education for students begins with motivated parents who want something better for their children. Families with similar aspirations who join together in community form schools, employ teachers, and set standards for excellence. This in turn provides for a stronger community, region, and country for future generations.

I want to thank the people of Hendricks for dedicating themselves to excellence in education for their children. They have taken on the challenge of quality schooling in rural Minnesota and have proven through creativity, innovation, teamwork, and hard work that local, independent schools can thrive in communities throughout Minnesota regardless of their size.

I also want to thank all the parents, teachers, and administration for welcoming me to their community. I have witnessed firsthand what the potential for education can be if it is guided by local interests rather than broad mandates from St. Paul or Washington. The state of Minnesota has a gem on its western border. Our children's future is bright if we take their lead.
