Legislators should vote for bonding bill

April 27, 2012

To the editor:

As session is winding down we still have a full plate of legislation to pass on the House floor, including a bonding bill.

I would like to encourage Governor Dayton and other state legislators to support this bonding bill that includes provisions for higher education, flood mitigation, Capitol building restoration as well as much needed infrastructure improvements.

The importance of keeping a sound infrastructure is a basic government activity, rebuilding our roads, and bridges are critical to getting our states goods to market.

Higher Education Asset Preservation, also known as HEAPR funds, which are allocated between the University of Minnesota and the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities. Southwest Minnesota State University is allocated some of those funds and helps to keep our college one of the top universities in the state.

Flood mitigation, as you know from recent years, is important to our area and others around the state. Many homes have seen their share of flooding in recent years, and have cost many families their hard earned dollars. It is time to invest in a plan that can mitigate major flood issues in the future.

Another component of the bonding bill includes funding for the Capitol building. The Capitol, as many of you know, needs major repairs to the exterior as well as to the infrastructure of the building.

It is my hope that my fellow legislators will join me in voting for the bonding bill that will improve the foundations that we have already built.

Representative Chris Swedzinski
