To the editor:
This letter is a "thank-you" to Lance Cpl. Ryan Merritt (Feb. 18, 2012, interview with Per Peterson) and all our troops, past and present.
Merritt, a Marshall native, continues his job in Afghanistan as a Marine turret gunner, while waiting to return home to his family, girlfriend, dog and American freedoms. Our soldiers have touched the hearts and lives of many adults and children in the Middle East in the past 10 years, both in Afghanistand and Iraq. "Great-hearted warriors" was one Iraqi's description of the American soldiers in Michael Yon's book, "Moment of Truth in Iraq."
Freedom of speech, freedom to vote, freedom of religion, freedom to go to school, freedom to trial by jury - and hopefully, in time, the right to life for unborn human beings. Merritt commented to Peterson, "If we can't or won't reach out to a nation who is being oppressed by terrorists, who else will...it comes down simply to helping someone in need."
