Faith in action for Jan. 13

January 13, 2012
By the Rev. Wesley Johnson , Marshall Independent

Wesley United Methodist Church

A tradition at Wesley United Methodist Church has been an annual Youth Christmas Fruit Basket Delivery to older adult members of the church. This year the Wesley United Methodist youth and the Albright United Methodist Youth have joined together to form The WAY Youth Ministry (Wesley Albright Youth) and finished an expanded Christmas Fruit Basket Delivery.

In December they met together and divided up into 15 groups of two to three youth and an adult driver to go out and deliver the fruit baskets. Forty-nine baskets were delivered and a wonderful sharing of generations happened. Some of the visits included singing of Christmas carols and many included the sharing of refreshments together. Stories were able to be told as well as just getting to know each other's interests and involvements. Many found this to be greatly encouraging and uplifting. It was a chance to see God in action. The gift of fruit was greatly appreciated but more importantly the gift of time and stories was the most impacting. The chance for the youth to reach out to those older than them and to be warmly received resulted in the strengthening of community.

Whenever we reach out and share ourselves with others blessings often abound. Let us not just relegate our need to reach and care for others to Christmas time but find a way to do it all year around. We all need to take a lesson from these youth and adults and put our faith into action.
