DivorceCare

Divorce is a devastating event in a person's life. It challenges one's identity; it affects one's children and finances, one's ability to concentrate at work and home, and one's relationship with God and others. Depression, loneliness, guilt and anger are common emotions experienced at this time. Often the pain and anguish of divorce are experienced in isolation. Recovery from divorce is difficult, but it is not impossible, and is eased and speeded up within a group of caring people.

"The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18), and Jesus says of Himself, "...He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted ..." (Isaiah 61:1). We are to be the hands and feet of Jesus. Marshall Evangelical Free Church has purposed to meet the needs of those who are brokenhearted due to separation or divorce. We have opted to use a video seminar series entitled DivorceCare. DivorceCare features some of the nation's foremost Christian experts on divorce and recovery topics, presented from a biblical perspective.

This program makes a difference in people's lives. The educational pieces in the videos are excellent; the topics covered are very relevant to a person's recovery, but the greatest asset to the program is the time of discussion following each video. Participants range from those newly separated, newly divorced, divorced for several years or experiencing the pain of a second or third divorce. It is a time for sharing hurts, trials, victories, and giving and receiving encouragement. I have watched participants grow in their recovery and faith through the length of the series. It is a joy to hear laughter again and see the transformation in lives. Recovery is on-going, but the DivorceCare program offers a tremendous start or boost to recovery.

Each video is about 45 minutes long and contains information and insights from experts, many of whom have also been divorced. Topics covered are loneliness, depression, anger, new relationships, single sexuality, forgiveness, reconciliation, dealing with children, what's happening to me, what does God say about divorce and moving on, growing closer to God. Each video stands on its own. It is possible to join the group anytime during the series. Participants are encouraged to go through the series several times, as new insights are gained throughout the recovery process. If you are divorced or separated, or know of anyone who would benefit from DivorceCare, please contact Kay Peterson, 537-1815 for more information, or to register. The series is offered several times each year, and will be offered again this fall. Watch for future announcements about dates. To learn more about the DivorceCare program go to: DivorceCare.org.
