Mustang Hoofprints: March 12

March 12, 2011
Marshall Independent

Hello Mustang fans!

It has been a very quiet but busy week around the Mustang athletics department as we come to the end of SMSU's spring break. Mustang baseball and softball are finishing up their competition in Florida today, women's golf spent the week practicing and competing in California, while Mustang tennis was competing in Arizona. I try to take advantage of a quiet office by putting a good dent in my "to do" list which covers six sheets of notebook paper and seems never-ending.

I am happy to report that the 2011 Gold Rush Raffle was a huge success from all aspects. I can safely say that all who attended had a good time with many new faces in the crowd. The event raised over $35,000 for the Mustang Booster Club, which is the largest amount of money the Gold Rush Raffle has raised over the eight years we have hosted the event. Maren Larson was the $5,000 winner, having the last ticket left in the barrel. The Gold Rush Raffle Committee did a great job in preparing us for this event. A big thank you to Karen VanKeulen, Brian Gruhot, Shelli Hawkinson, Jen Hanson, Kacie Weatherly, Rolly Muller and Tim Steinbach for all your hard work and great ideas.

The SMSU athletics department continued the next day hosting the SMSU Hall of Honor banquet. There was a crowd of over 180 people who came to hear heart-warming memories and stories told by the inductees and their presenters about Southwest and the impact the university and the community has had on their lives

The SMSU Hall of Honor Class of 2011 included: former volleyball and basketball player Jenai (Hutchinson) Wright; former football player and track athlete Carlton Lance; former tennis player Carolina Gomez; former director of athletics Butch Raymond; community member and long-time supporter of SMSU athletics Dick Jorgensen; and the 2000-01 men's basketball team. Congratulations to all our inductees and thank you for your many contributions that have helped to build the foundation of Southwest Minnesota State University and Mustang Athletics.

I would like to wish the best of luck to CD Johnson, who is competing at 184 pounds in the NCAA Division II National Wrestling Tournament this weekend. The tournament will be hosted by the University of Nebraska-Kearney at the UNK Health and Sports Center.

Today, the SMSU Athletics Department will be hosting the Minnesota High School Boys' Basketball Class A and AA semifinal games in the R/A Facility, beginning at 12:30 p.m., when Ellsworth takes on Hills-Beaver Creek. Concluding the two-game Class A session will be MACCRAY versus Dawson-Boyd at 2:30 p.m.

Tonight features two Class AA semifinal matchups, starting with Windom against Jackson County Central at 6 p.m. At 8 p.m., Montevideo will battle Redwood Valley. All games will take place in the R/A Facility. The section final games will be held on Thursday in the R/A Facility on the campus of SMSU, with the Class A final game beginning at 5 p.m. and the Class AA final starting at 8 p.m.

As our spring sports make it back from their competitions in the South, I hope we will get some warmer weather so our teams can get outside and continue playing their spring schedules. It has been a long winter and spring cannot come soon enough for all of us in Marshall.

Good luck to all of our Mustang teams this week.

Go Mustangs!

- Congratulations to Karen VanKeulen, who provided the correct answer to last week's Mustang Hoofprints Trivia Question: Who were the two SMSU student-athletes who spoke at the 2010 Gold Rush Raffle?
