Mustang Hoofprints: Jan. 20

January 20, 2011
By Chris Hmielewski

Hello Mustang Fans!

Wednesday, the Mustang family lost a longtime SMSU supporter and Mustang Booster Club member with the passing of Ronald "Ronnie Mac" McLaughlin. Ronnie had a great passion for the university, our athletic teams, staff members and especially our student-athletes. He and wife, Marilyn, have been a constant at university, athletics department and booster club events. The thoughts and prayers of the Mustang family go out to Marilyn and the entire McLaughlin family. We will miss you dearly, Ronnie Mac.

This year's Gold Rush Raffle hosted by the Mustang Booster Club will be on Feb. 25 in the SMSU Conference Center ballroom. Tickets are just $50 each for your chance to win the grand prize of $5,000. If you are interested in purchasing a ticket, call the athletic department at 507-537-7204.

If you have not been to the Gold Rush Raffle, you should buy a raffle ticket and join us for a night of fun, friendship and laughter. Every year, the raffle gets great reviews from the people who attend. It is a mid-winter social event that you will not want to miss, with cash prizes, give-aways, mystery prizes, games and silent and live raffle items. The Gold Rush is sponsored by the Mustang Booster Club and has sold out all six years. For more information on the Gold Rush Raffle, please go to SMSUmustangs.com and click on the "Gold Rush Raffle" button on the right side of our webpage.

Here is a rundown of the Mustang Booster Club and SMSU Athletics Department special events coming up in January and February:

- The SMSU men's and women's basketball teams will hold the 2nd Annual Alumni Basketball Weekend on Saturday. There will be an alumni basketball game featuring both men's and women's past players that will be played in the PE Gym at SMSU starting at 2 p.m.

Fact Box

How many years has the SMSU women's basketball team been hosting the Alumni Women's Basketball Weekend?

The first person to email me at MustangHoofPrints@SMSU.edu with the correct answer to this question will receive an SMSU t-shirt. The winner will be announced on The Saturday Morning Mustang Show between 9-10 a.m. on 1400 AM each week.

After the alumni game, participants can grab a Burger King Whopper and cheer on the SMSU women's and men's basketball teams as they take on Bemidji State. A social will be held following the men's game at Shay's and is sponsored by the men's and women's basketball teams along with the Mustang Booster Club.

New this year to the SMSU Alumni Basketball Weekend is "The Mustang Way," in honor and recognition of basketball teams and coaches who paved the way for SMSU basketball today.

This Year's Alumni Weekend teams of honor are:

Women's teams: 1969-70, 1970-71, 1971-72, 1972-73, 1973-74, 1974-75

Men's teams: 1967-68, 1968-69, 1969-70, 1970-71, 1971-72, 1972-73, 1973-74, 1974-75

Teams will have the opportunity to coach during the Alumni Basketball games Saturday afternoon and will then be recognized on Saturday evening during the SMSU basketball games. The Mustang wheelchair basketball team (8-1 overall) will be traveling to the University of Illinois this weekend to play five games in Champagne, Ill., for the College Conference Wheelchair Basketball Tournament. The Mustang will play Alabama, Illinois, Edinboro and Texas-Arlington all this weekend.

The Mustangs added a student-athlete to the SMSU wheelchair Basketball team over the winter break. Derek Klinkner, an SMSU football player, will be joining the Mustang wheelchair basketball program to finish out the 2010-11 winter season. Head coach Lew Shaver has indicated that Derek has brought linebacker's mentality to practice and has provided great energy to the team.

Good luck to all of our Mustang teams this week. Go Mustangs!

- Congratulations to Sara Dolan, for providing the correct answer to last week's Mustang Hoofprints Trivia Question: What Marshall couple became engaged during Hawaiian Night five years ago at halftime of the men's basketball game? David Krull asked Brittany Knutson to marry him during halftime of the men's basketball game at the 2006 Hawaiian Night festivities while playing the Newlywed Game.
