Tucker’s half-court shot puts Warriors past Mustangs

After dropping two last-second games on the road last weekend, the Southwest Minnesota State men's basketball team seemed poised to win on Friday.

After Jordan Miller hit a three-pointer with three second remaining to put the Mustangs up 66-65, Winona State had one more possession remaining.

With time expiring, Anthony Tucker put up a prayer from half court and sunk the game-winner, giving the Warriors a 68-66 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win over the Mustangs in Winona.

Winona State improves to 3-1 in the NSIC, and 6-1 overall, while the Mustangs have dropped three straight conference games on the road to fall to 2-3 in the NSIC, 5-4 overall.

"We designed it so we have a guy who's roaming and supposed to double the basketball," SMSU head coach Brad Bigler said about the last play. "Unfortunately, he was not in the picture. The only assignment in the whole situation is to double whoever gets the basketball, and it did not happen."

Tucker's basket completed a come-from-behind win for the Warriors, who trailed by six with 5 minutes, 46 seconds remaining in the game. Tucker, a transfer from Division I Iowa, finished with a game-high 26 points.

Leading the way for the Mustangs was Lavione West, who scored a career-high 15 points in the loss. Miller also had 15 points, and Scott Roehl added 12.

"I think we're learning early that it's hard to win on the road," Bigler said. "It takes every guy on that roster to have that sense of urgency. ... It was a lot of things in our control that went wrong. If we have a little better discipline, we can be a team that makes a run. My biggest concern is we have to bounce back."

Today, the Mustangs travel to Fayette, Iowa to take on Upper Iowa.
