Marshall’s defense stuns Cardinals, 59-20

The Marshall girls basketball team put in a lock-down defensive effort Tuesday night in its Southwest Conference opener, shutting down Redwood Valley in a 59-20 road victory.

Marshall held a 42-14 lead at the half and held the Cardinals to just six points in the second half.

"Our press gave them some trouble early on and we had some baskets off our pressure," Marshall head coach Dan Westby said. "We really rebounded well and didn't give them many second chance shots."

Kelsey Saugstad was the lone Tigers to score in double figures. She put up 12 points, hitting a pair of three pointers. She also had three steals and two blocks.

Amanda Tate was the next highest scorer for Marshall with nine points to go with her six rebounds. Jessica Baker, Kelly VanLeeuwe and Morgan McKittrick each had six points for the Tigers, with Baker also recording a team-high seven boards.

Marshall's bench got plenty of playing time in the blowout, with 12 players scoring and 15 players seeing time on the court.

Due to a weather postponement, the Tigers hadn't played since winning their season opener Dec. 2 against Fairmont. With the long stretch in between games, Westby and the coaching staff had concerns about how their players would perform in Tuesday's game. It turns out, they didn't have much to worry about.

"That was a question for us was how we were going to come out and play (Tuesday)," Westby said. "Our kids came out and were really ready to play. They had been practicing for a month and had just played that one other game, so they were excited to play again."

Marshall will look to start the season 3-0 when it hosts conference rival Worthington Thursday. The Trojans won the Southwest Conference last year with an 11-1 conference record and defeated the Tigers three times, including a win in the section playoffs.
