Hello Mustang Fans!
Last weekend, the campus of SMSU was at capacity with Marshall High School (MHS) and SMSU activities. SMSU kicked off the activities with the 2010 Smokefest in the R/A Facility parking lot as teams began arriving early Friday morning and continued up to the Cook's Meeting beginning at 5 p.m. MHS hosted a Tiger football game at the Regional Event Center (REC) on Friday evening with the Mustang Trail Street Dance following the game as part of the Smokefest schedule of events.
Saturday started with the Mustang Stampede Walk/5K Run and the Wellness and Health Expo in the Regional Event Center. The Pursuit of Excellence clinicals also began Saturday morning and continued throughout the day. The Smokefest judging began at noon, along with Mustang soccer in the REC. Mustang volleyball kicked off at 3 p.m. and the day concluded with Mustang football and the Pursuit of Excellence field competition held on opposite ends of campus. Thank goodness for good weather.
A special thank you to the entire SMSU Athletics Department and University staff who helped to make last weekend a huge success for the campus and the Marshall community.

This weekend in sports, the SMSU football team (2-1, 1-1 NSIC) will open NSIC South Division play on Saturday with a road game at No. 24 Augustana College (3-0, 2-0 NSIC) in Sioux Falls, S.D. The contest will start at 1 p.m. at Kirkeby-Over Stadium.
The Mustangs are coming off their first loss of the season last Saturday, a 30-14 home setback to Bemidji State, while Augustana stayed perfect on the season with a 52-21 home victory over the University of Mary.
The fourth-ranked SMSU volleyball team will travel north this weekend to take on No. 2 Minnesota Duluth and Bemidji State in NSIC matches. The Mustangs will play UMD on Friday at 7 p.m. in Duluth. The Mustangs will then travel to Bemidji State to take on the Beavers at 4 p.m. Saturday.
The Mustangs head into this weekend's competition with a 10-1 record. SMSU is off to its best start in school history. The Mustangs were 7-0 until they dropped the championship game of the Colorado Premier Challenge against Wayne State, which was also unbeaten. The last team to start a season undefeated was the 2004 team (6-0). Before then, the best start in school history belonged to the 1978 team which started 5-0. The 2008 Mustangs started their season 13-1, and finished the season 28-6, 16-4 NSIC.
SMSU's head women's golf coach Ross Webskowski announced Thursday that this weekend's 13-team Mustang Invite, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, will now be a one-day tournament on Sunday due to heavy rainfall in Marshall.
The 36-hole tournament was originally set to have the first round on Saturday and the final round on Sunday. All 36 holes will now be played on Sunday, with the first round starting at 8 a.m., with a shotgun start. The final round will start at 1 p.m. with another shotgun start.
The SMSU soccer team (1-3, 0-2 NSIC) will travel to Northern State (2-2-2, 0-0-1 NSIC) on Friday, with the competition beginning at 4 p.m. in Aberdeen, S.D.The team will travel to Bismarck, N.D. on Sunday to play the University of Mary (1-4, 0-1 NSIC) at 2 p.m.
