Faith in action for Sept. 3

September 3, 2010
By the Rev. Bernard Wing

Grace Life Church

In July 2006 we became the stewards of a very valuable community asset by being awarded the privilege to purchase the East Side Grade School building at 601 E. College Drive. Our faith has been stretched but we have continued and expanded our efforts to minister the life of Jesus Christ in the same ways we had done at the 305 Camden Drive location.

From the inception of the Marshall Area Christian School back in 1987 we have been a strong supporter to help provide an opportunity for children to have a Christ-centered learning experience. We have been a supplier of some of the teachers, board members, and students as just one of the many churches whose families have sacrificed and sent their children to receive a Christian education.

This new location has allowed for the consolidation of all the K to 8th grade classes to come under one roof. It also has allowed for them to have individual designated class room space along with other normal school amenities like an office, a gym for chapel and sports, cafeteria, large green space for sports and physical education, and a playground.

Moving to this building provided the opportunity for Western Community Action to return their Head Start classes back to the city of Marshall. They have partnered with us to provide the much needed preschool services to Marshall and surrounding communities.

The Seventh Day Adventist Church has a regular meeting space to use for its Saturday morning worship times. It also has a place for small group Bible studies.

In the summer of 2008, the city was able to use one air conditioned meeting room during the large sewer and street project in our area as a neighborhood briefing location. Other community groups like the House of Hope make weekly use of classroom meeting space for its parenting classes and counseling of families experiencing a crisis.

Besides our Sunday morning worship services there are a number of other weekly Bible study opportunities provided for the community. These are just some of the ways we see faith in action with a ladies weekly video series, the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University, and the Most Excellent Way alternative meetings on Monday evenings. The Most Excellent Way meetings have been in progress for nine years and are for any who are struggling with hurts, habits and hang-ups that are hindering their lives in any way with family, coworkers, others, themselves and with God. The goal is that of helping all to become God dependent and not alcohol, chemical, or even people dependent.

This spring and summer we put our faith in action to remodel the bathrooms to put in large regular adult bathrooms near the worship center space of the gymnasium. Our next faith step of action will be to expand the gym to allow for a permanent stage and some permanent seating that does not have to be disassembled and stored each week during the school year.

We have been greatly blessed and are honored to be stewards of this building and property in the heart of the city. Grace Life Church has a heart for the city of Marshall and surrounding communities and we will continue to reach out in faith to love all people into a lasting relationship with Jesus Christ. You are invited to come and take a look at the changes that our faith in action has accomplished over the past four years.
