Today, the SMSU fall athletic season begins with Mustang football battling the Northern State Wolves in a non-conference game at Mattke Field at the Regional Event Center. Pregame festivities will be held in the R/A Facility parking lot and kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
This will be the first time SMSU and NSU have played in a non-conference game and will also be the first time the two teams have met for a season opener.The game will feature the Mustangs' new head coach, Cory Sauter, in his first season and a talented group of assistant coaches leading the Mustangs into battle this year. Bring the family out to the Regional Event Center and kick off the Labor Day weekend with SMSU Mustang football!
The Mustang volleyball team is nationally ranked No. 15 and opens the 2010 campaign this weekend when the Mustangs travel to Golden, Colo., to compete in the Colorado School of Mines Classic. SMSU will take on Slippery Rock (Pa.) in its first match of the season at noon on Friday. Later on Friday, the Mustangs will play Regis (Colo.) at 4:30 p.m. SMSU will open play on Day 2 with a pair of contests taking on Mesa State (Colo.) in game one at 11 a.m. and Colorado School of Mines at 5:30 p.m. in Game 2.
The SMSU women's golf team opens the 2010-11 season this weekend with the Maverick Round-Up on Saturday at the New Ulm Country Club.SMSU will then host the Mustang Round-Up on Sunday at the Marshall Golf Club. Seventh-year head coach Ross Webskowski welcomes 10 athletes for this upcoming season, including six returning letterwinners. SMSU will be looking to make its third-straight NCAA regional appearance and its eighth in school history.
The SMSU soccer team will open its 2010 season Saturday against Colorado-Colorado Springs at 7 p.m. at Mattke Field. Saturday's contest with Colorado-Colorado Springs will be the second meeting between the two teams, which first met in 2008. In their previous matchup, SMSU traveled to Colorado Springs where UCCS defeated the Mustangs 1-0. The Mustangs earned an exhibition win Saturday at Mattke Field when they defeated Bethel 3-1. Kelly Fitzgerald, Whitney Borstad and Tatum Borstad all netted goals for SMSU.

The Mustang Booster Club, in partnership with SMSU Athletics, has a full schedule of fall activities, beginning with the 5th annual Mustang Shootout. The Shootout, presented by Marshall Radio, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 11, at Shooter's Sporting Clays 10 miles east of Marshall, with registration beginning at 9 a.m. The competition will begin at 10:30 a.m. and included a duck flurry and frenzy, as well as the opportunity to shoot 100 birds on a 14-station course.
