Sovell receives scholarship

Southwest Minnesota State University announces that Emily Sovell, the daughter of Jane and Ken Sovell of Marshall has been selected to receive a Charles and Ellora Alliss Educational Foundation Scholarship for the 2010-2011 academic year. Recipients of these scholarships are recognized for their academic accomplishments and outstanding leadership abilities.

Her planned major is Spanish.

Bartness receives scholarship

Southwest Minnesota State University announces that Cassandra Bartness, the daughter of Kim and Vickie Bartness of Marshall, has been selected to receive a Charles and Ellora Alliss Educational Foundation Scholarship for the 2010-2011 academic year. Recipients of these scholarships are recognized for their academic accomplishments and outstanding leadership abilities.

Her planned major is business administration with a Spanish minor.

Peterson receives scholarship

Southwest Minnesota State University announces that Aaron Peterson, son of Scott and Peggy Peterson of Cottonwood, has been selected to receive a Charles and Ellora Alliss Educational Foundation Scholarship for the 2010-2011 academic year. Recipients of these scholarships are recognized for their academic accomplishments and outstanding leadership abilities.

His planned major is chemistry.

Onken receives scholarship

Southwest Minnesota State University announces that Jessica Onken, the daughter of Brian Onken of Marshall, has been selected to receive a Charles and Ellora Alliss Educational Foundation Scholarship for the 2010-2011 academic year. Recipients of these scholarships are recognized for their academic accomplishments and outstanding leadership abilities.

Her planned majors are biology and chemistry.

Watterson receives scholarship

Southwest Minnesota State University announces that Joshua Watterson, son of Kenneth Wilson and DeAnn Wilson of Marshall, has been selected to receive a Willmar Poultry Company/Life-Science Innovations/Turkey Valley Farms Scholarship for the 2010-2011 academic year. Recipients of these scholarships are recognized for their academic accomplishments and outstanding leadership abilities.

His planned major is exercise science.

Edwards admitted to SMSU

Ashley Edwards, the daughter of Keith and Lisa Edwards of Marshall, has been accepted for the fall 2010 semester at Southwest Minnesota State University.

Her planned major field of study is medical technology.

Pichaske receives honorary doctorate in Mongolia

David Pichaske, an English professor at Southwest Minnesota State University, was recently awarded an honorary doctorate degree from the National University of Mongolia.

Pichaske first went to Mongolia in 2003 as a Fulbright scholar, and has since maintained a close relationship with the English and American Studies department at the school.

Pichaske has also set up a scholarship program at the National University of Mongolia that serves disadvantaged Mongolian students. The scholarship has served more than 30 students in the past seven years.

"It's a nice honor," said Pichaske. "We've had a good relationship since I went over there as a Fulbright scholar. We've sent one of our students over there, and one of theirs has attended SMSU. It's a cooperative relationship we hope to further in the future."
