Hello Mustang Fans!
It is hard to believe we have closed out another year in Mustang athletics. As we finish up the spring and head into the summer months, the Mustang Booster Club has a couple of events for you to help support the efforts of our booster club, student-athletes, coaches and staff members in the SMSU athletics department.
The Mustang Booster Club began its annual membership drive two weeks ago and will meet every Wednesday for the next two weeks, with a goal of signing up over 400 total members and raising more than $150,000 over a five-week period.
The membership drive has three super teams out renewing memberships and signing up new members to be part of the Mustang family. If you have questions about the Mustang Booster Club membership drive, please contact Tim Steinbach at 507-537-7204.
The Mustang Golf Classic is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The banquet will be held Sunday, June 13, and the golf tournament will take place the following day. Both events will be held at the Marshall Golf Club.
The Mustang Golf Classic committee has put together a special event commemorating 25 years of this great event. We have begun receiving team registrations already in the Athletic Development Office, and I would encourage your team to register early for this year's 25th anniversary of the Mustang Golf Classic.
The Mustang softball team finished up its season last Friday with losses to Augustana College (S.D.) and Concordia University-St. Paul in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament, held in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Mustangs finished the season with an 18-25 overall record. Coach Shawn Semler has led his teams to seven consecutive NSIC tournament appearances. SMSU softball did not qualify for the NCAA Regional Tournament this year after reaching the tournament each of the last four seasons.
The SMSU baseball team finished the season 29-18 overall with a 6-5 loss to Minnesota State University-Mankato in the championship game of the NSIC tournament in St. Cloud.
The Mustangs, who were the tournament's No. 5 seed, lost their opening round game of the tournament last Wednesday, but won three straight games to advance to their seventh NSIC tournament championship game. SMSU finished the season ranked eighth in the Central Region rankings, with the top six teams qualifying for the NCAA Regional Tournament, and the team's 29 victories are the fifth most in school history.
This will be the last week of Mustang Hoofprints until early August when our fall athletic teams report to camp. The SMSU athletics department appreciates the support from the Marshall community and all of southwestern Minnesota.
Until next August, Go Mustangs!
Last week's answer to the Mustang Hoofprints Trivia Question: How many NSIC tournament appearances have both the Mustang baseball and softball teams participated in under head coaches Paul Blanchard and Shawn Semler?
Coach Blanchard has made fourteen straight NSIC tournament appearances and Coach Semler has participated in seven straight NSIC tournaments, combining for 21 total tournament appearances in 21 attempts.
Thank you to all who submitted answers to the Mustang Hoofprints trivia question throughout the year.
