Yes, he knows that moving from Kentucky to Minnesota involves snow at some point, but snow is not an unfamiliar entity to Jeff Sopland.

"We got a total of 14 inches of snow this winter," he said. "And in 1997 we got a blizzard where 18 inches of snow fell. We were shut down for a week."

Sopland moved with his family recently to Clarkfield, where his father and other relatives live. His business, Tylan Advertising, can be conducted through the Internet, he said.

Jeff Sopland’s Internet business, Tylan Advertising, has most of its clients based in Louisville, Ky., but he’s looking to expand his client list in Minnesota.

"Ninety percent of my clients agreed to stay with me," he said.

Although the majority of his business is in Louisville, Ky., Sopland wants to build up his clientele in Minnesota as well. In addition, he already has clients in South Dakota and Wisconsin.

"I want to be so busy that I'm overwhelmed," he said.

Sopland has back up to meet deadlines or if the work is beyond his technical capability.

"If it gets into coding or a database, I have support if I need it," he said.

Sopland designs a lot of logos and Web sites for companies. He has also done market research.

"I spent six months doing work for Procter and Gamble when they were taste testing a new Vitamin C drink," he said.

Sopland has a graphic design degree from Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Ky. He has more than 13 years of agency experience doing work including advertising, brand development, direct mail and Web development.

He said he can help large or small companies.

"I can do everything from small local furniture stores to hospital networks," he said.

A lot of his work involves brand identity, which includes business cards and letterheads.

"I've done ads for newspapers," he said. "I've done a lot of billboards. I do the coordination of getting (price) quotes, see after the printing, check out locations..."

Sopland said the name of his agency is a blending together of he and his wife's sons' names - Tyler and Evan, who are 13 and 4 years old respectively.
