Mustang Hoofprints

April 15, 2010
Chris Hmielewski

Hello Mustang fans!

I know the announcement of Brad Bigler as our Mustang head men's basketball coach came out last week, but I would like to take the time in this week's Hoofprints article to congratulate Brad and his family on the position. This announcement brings to a close the search process for the SMSU athletics department. We have moved swiftly and it took the efforts of a lot of people to bring us to this point. Thank you to all the SMSU staff and Marshall community members who participated in the various aspects of the search process.

The SMSU tennis team lost to Augustana on Monday, snapping a five-match winning streak in a 7-2 decision at Legion Field. SMSU fell to 8-8 (4-5 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) on the season and will be in action again Saturday when the Mustangs travel to Bethel College.

The Mustang softball team (12-13, 5-5 NSIC) closed a six-game homestand Wednesday, playing host to St. Cloud State (18-14, 5-5 NSIC). The Mustangs won Game 1 against the Huskies 4-1 and lost Game 2 8-6. The Mustang will be traveling to Bemidji State (3-20, 1-9 NSIC) on Saturday for a noon doubleheader and to Minnesota-Duluth on Sunday, also scheduled to begin at noon.

The SMSU baseball team (13-11, 9-5 NSIC) played a doubleheader Wednesday against Bemidji State in a mid-week NSIC matchup. The Mustangs won Game 1 of the doubleheader 14-8 and went on to win Game 2 12-4. SMSU baseball will host Upper Iowa this week at Alumni Field in a pair of doubleheaders, with Saturday's contest beginning at 1 p.m. and Sunday's starting at noon.

The SMSU women's golf team recorded a team score of 320 in the final round of the Augustana Invite at Prairie Green Golf Course in Sioux Falls, S.D. last weekend. The Mustangs finished in fifth place with a two-round total of 638 at the 12-team tournament, where Gustavus won the title with a score of 610.

SMSU was led by KC Kane, who finished in a tie for 12th with a 12-over-par 156. Krista Weiszhaar finished in a tie for 14th place with a 13-over 157. SMSU will continue play next weekend at the Maverick Invite in Lake City, hosted at the Jewell Golf Club.

Spring football is in full swing out at Mattke Field in the Regional Event Center. Mustang football has 13 scheduled practices with the spring scrimmage taking place on April 24 at 1 p.m., also at Mattke Field.

Good luck to our Mustang teams this weekend. Go Mustangs!

n Congratulations to Rick Haberman of Tracy, who provided the correct answer to the last Mustang Hoofprints Trivia Question: What head softball coach has coached in the most games for the Mustangs? Former head Mustang softball coach Marilyn Strate coached in 363 games at SMSU, compiling a 225-138 record during her tenure. Current head coach Shawn Semler has coached in 334 games at SMSU with a 206-128 overall record.

Thank you to all who submitted answers to last week's trivia question.
