A second-half charge by the Winona State University women's basketball team resulted in the second straight loss for the Southwest Minnesota State University Friday night in Winona.

SMSU (9-4, 3-3 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) held a seven point lead on the Warriors at the half, but could keep things together in the second half and lost 64-62.

"We played real solid defense in the first half and created some easy scoring opportunities," SMSU head coach Mike Jewett said. "In the second half we had quite a few defensive breakdowns, but still had a chance in the end. That's all you can ask for."

After taking a 30-23 halftime lead, the Mustangs went cold in the second half and had a six minute stretch where they went without a field goal. The cold spell allowed the Warriors to take a lead and the Mustangs had to play catch up in the game's final minutes.

Down two points with four seconds remaining, SMSU had a chance to tie the game, but a jumper by Heather Smith fell off the mark.

Abby Kenealy led SMSU with 14 points, while Megan Stadler had 11 and Smith and Laura Kramer each had 10.

The Mustangs will continue their NSIC road trip today against Upper Iowa University at 6 p.m.
