MARSHALL - The Marshall girls hockey team skated three strong periods, but fell 5-1 to section rival Willmar at the Lyon County Ice Arena in Marshall on Tuesday.
"Willmar is a good team," Marshall head coach Kevin Schroeder said. "We scrimmaged them earlier this season so we knew what they were about. We talked about coming out with good intensity and I thought we matched their intensity."
The Cardinals held a 2-1 advantage after two periods. Erin Sheehan put Willmar on the scoreboard at 15:19 in the first period assisted by Meckenzie Dahle. Then Brooke Mayer added a second goal at 15:14 into the next period on an assist from Samantha Thompson.
Heidi Schroepfer found the back of the net at 12:06 in the second period on a break away.
"Whenever we score, it just brings the intensity level right up," said Schroepfer. "It makes us keep fighting for that puck. The energy and fire you're feeling just makes you keep going because anything can happen."
Schroepfer thought the Tigers battled hard despite the loss.
"I thought we skated three hard periods," she said. "Willmar is a really good team. They made us skate faster than we usually do. It was a faster paced game than we are used to. These kinds of games are what we want to be playing to get to the level we want."
The Cardinals added three more goals in the third period en route to the victory.
"We skated better in the second period," Schroeder said. "They're a good team and we wanted to try to skate with them. We wanted to have that mind set and then carry it over to the Schwan's Cup. There will be some really good teams there."
The Tigers (5-4, 3-0) are on the road at the three-day Schwan's Cup and open with Long Prairie/Grey Eagle at 8:30 p.m. Monday.
