MINNEOTA - The Minneota Vikings played unselfish and disciplined basketball against Yellow Medicine East in Minneota Monday night.

The Vikings moved the ball around and recorded 25 assists, while holding the Sting to less than 30 points in the 69-28 non-conference routing.

"We're transitioning all the time," Minneota head coach Val Whipple said. "We're still not shooting as good as we think we can shoot. We're getting a lot of good shots, but we're not making as many as we should. But it was a nice win."

Minneota held a 9-7 advantage early, but worked its way to a commanding 34-16 halftime lead after outscoring YME 2-1 in the opening half.

"We had a nice transition game," Whipple said. "We're playing quicker defensively too than we did a year ago, so therefore we're bothering teams a little bit. We're not as passive defensively and that's given us some advantages."

Minneota stormed out of the break with an 8-0 run. But the Sting battled back and converted two steals into two straight baskets from Kris Goss and Taylor Olson. But turnovers quickly mounted. YME committed 31 turnovers in the contest, while Minneota had 10.

"We knew coming in that Minneota would be a decent team," YME head coach Brandon Raymo said. "They didn't necessarily do anything special to us, but we did a lot of things to ourselves. We had a lot of unforced errors and turnovers. We've had some tough games, but this is the first game that we've had those."

Then Brett Przymus drained a three-pointer from the right wing to start a 12-2 rally as the Vikings continued to find the open man on the court. Zac Corbin hit behind the arc with 11:07 remaining to end the surge with Minneota dominating 54-22.

"Corbin and Shane (Hennen) have been getting some freelance drives," Whipple said. "They're just putting the ball on the floor and going and that will probably be an asset to us when we play better teams."

Will Kurka led the Vikings with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Hennen contributed 13 points, nine assists and four steals. Zac Corbin added 13 points, while Przymus chipped in nine points and four assists.

After Adam Savariego scored in the paint for the Sting, Hennen dished off to Jordan Fink, who added a basket and started another 8-0 run, which ended with 5:42 left and the Vikings ahead 63-26.

Taylor Olson and Brian Rosenau scored six points for the Sting. Rosenau grabbed six boards, while Olson added five rebounds and four assists. Dylan Lindstrom chipped in five points, two assists, two steals and two blocks.

"We have some good guards," said Raymo. "Brian plays hard and does some nice things. He's always in their for the rebound. I tell him he gets hustle points. He gets outmuscled though because he's our big, bulky guy that isn't very big and bulky."

Minneota (3-1, 2-1 Camden) is on the road at the Lac qui Parle Valley tournament Monday and Tuesday. The Vikings open the four-team tournament against Ortonville at 3:30 p.m. Monday. YME (0-6, 0-4 West Central) travels to face Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City on Jan. 5.
