CANBY - The word young was mentioned often Saturday to describe the Canby wrestling team at the Border Battle Tournament in Canby. But it wasn't an excuse, it was a reason coach Perry Fink and several wrestlers said, the team needed leadership and for members to improve performance.
Canby finished 0-3 Saturday with losses to Yellow Medicine East, Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City and Adrian.
"Yeah, we're a young team but that's no excuse," junior Travis Longhenry (189) said. "We've got quite a few guys with experience and we need to pull it together."
Longhenry was 1-2 in the tournament but pinned his ACGC opponent.
Senior Brock Claeys (171) won his 75th match Saturday, a 10-4 victory over Ryan Larson of ACGC. Claeys also beat Mason Hegna of YME but lost a 3-2 to Stephen Loosbrock of Adrian.
"It's different this year," Claeys said of being a senior. "I have to step it up."
Claeys said his focus is not only to win but to pin his opponent.
"I need to be more of a pinner this year," Claeys said. Pins mean more points and more leadership for his team.
Fink said his team was flat and not very aggressive for much of the day Saturday.
"We just need to fight against stuff more," Fink said. "We are on defense all the time."
"There is no messing around," Fink said of competing against the teams that participated in the annual tournament.
Canby lost to YME 41-21 but got pins from Ted Berckes (119) and Cedric Citrowske(135).
Canby got its first win against ACGC at 140 when Matt Jelen won 7-4.
ACGC won 58-12.
The Lancers' next win was at 171 when Claeys earned his 75th career win.
Longhenry pinned his opponent to give the Lancers a third victory in the match.
Danny Miller (130) and Berckes (119) picked up two wins for the Lancers against Adrian. The Lancers lost 52-6.
"We have to keep working harder to be more aggressive," Berckes said. Berckes, a junior, said he must be in a leadership role on the team.
"I know my job and I've been asked to get pins," Berckes said.
That's not an easy task when teams are as good as those in Saturday's tournament.
"As a leader you are expected to win. We have to work as hard as we can every match," Berckes said.
"We had some pretty good teams take it to us," Fink said of the opponents on Saturday. "We were just on our backs too much and it's hard to score points and win when you are on the defensive so much."
