The score was tied at 33-all with one wrestling bout remaining in the dual between Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove and Marshall in Tracy Friday.

Matt Wakefield became the hero for the Panthers after pulling off a 5-3 decision over Marshall's Taylor Varpness in the final battle at the heavyweight class.

TMB/WWG escaped with the hard-fought 36-33 victory.

"It was really close and came down to the heavyweight," said Marshall head coach Justin Bouwman. "There were a couple of other matches that could have went either way, but we came out on the short end."

The Tigers started strong in the lower weights, winning 4-of-5 early matchups. Riley Roth, Alex Prorok, Derek Varpness and Neil Citrowske all pinned their opponents in the stretch.

But the Panthers quickly turned things around with four straight wins with pins from Cody Christian and Zach Campbell in addition to decisions by Jared Towne and Ian Mariner.

Campbell Hofstetter and Stephen Womack added wins for Marshall, but then Noah VanNevel and Andrew Martinez evened the playing field again for TMB/WWG.
