Marshall girls hockey comeback bid falls short

The Marshall girls hockey team was unable to recover from an early deficit against Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato Tuesday, and lost 5-3.

The Dragons jumped out to a 4-0 lead until the Tigers finally found the net in the third period on a goal by Rachel Peters. Marshall would score two more goals to cut the lead to one, but a late score by the Dragons put the game away.

Marshall head coach Kevin Schroeder said his team failed to match the Dragons' aggressiveness in the game.

"They came out moving their feet," Schroeder said. "That was the difference. They skated a lot more aggressively as a team than we did."

Marshall (4-3) was led by Peters, who finished with two goals in the game for two points. Ida Erikkson, a foreign-exchange student from Sweden, scored the Tigers' final goal of the game, the first of her career. Lizzie Archbold had Marshall's only assist on Erikkson's goal.

The Dragons (1-9) were led by Ellie Black and Brittney Berning, who each had two points. Black's came on two goals, while Berning had a goal and an assists.

The Dragons finished with a 32-26 advantage in shots on goal for the game. Much of that was offset by a first period in which LDC outshot the Tigers 8-3. Marshall had 11 shots on goal to the Dragons' 14 in the second period, then outshot them 12-10 in the third period.

"We didn't capitalize on our opportunities," Schroeder said. "... Just not being aggressive overall, and they were."

But Schroeder also wanted to see his Tigers take more control on defense, noting that his team needs to show more aggression in that area, too.

"We've got to learn to be more competitive in our defensive zone," Schroeder said, "Be more aggressive and force the other team to take lower-percentage shots."

Marshall will travel to Redwood Valley on Thursday.
