Mustang Hoofprints

December 3, 2009
Chris Hmielewski

I hope everyone had a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving holiday. As we head into this weekend's athletic events, all of the Southwest Minnesota State University teams are competing are on the road.

The SMSU women's basketball team (3-1, 0-0 Northers Sun Intercollegiate Conference) will open NSIC play on Saturday when the Mustangs travel to Minnesota State University-Mankato (5-1, 0-0 NSIC). Saturday's game will begin at 2 p.m. at the Taylor Center in Mankato as the Mustangs will do battle with last year's national champions.

The No.11 SMSU men's basketball team (4-0, 0-0 NSIC) will open the 20-game NSIC season also this Saturday against the No. 22 MSU-Mankato (5-0, 0-0 NSIC) with the game slated to start at 4 p.m.

The game will be a rematch of last season's NCAA Central Region semifinal in Marshall that SMSU won 77-69. Saturday's game is also the first of 11 road games SMSU will play this season. Last season SMSU finished 3-1 versus nationally-ranked opponents. This should be a great early season NSIC matchup.

SMSU men's and women's basketball can be heard all season long on 105.1 KARL FM. Aaron Ziemer, the voice of the Mustangs, will again handle the play-by-play.

The SMSU wrestling team (1-0, 0-0 NSIC) will travel to Minnesota State University-Moorhead on Saturday to wrestle in the Dragon Open, beginning at 9 a.m. For updates on this weekend's Dragon Open, be sure to check out MSUM's official athletics Web site at www.msumdragons.com.

SMSU will wrestle in three open tournaments to usher in the 2009-10 season. SMSU will complete its open tournament competition next weekend when the Mustangs travel to St. Cloud on Dec.12 for the St. Cloud State University Husky Open.

Good luck to all of our Mustang Teams this weekend. Go Mustangs!

Last week, no one provided the correct answer to the Mustang Hoofprints Trivia Question: With all the bleachers out, how many fans will the R/A Facility seat for sporting events? The R/A Facility, when all seats are occupied, holds 3,562 fans in the bleacher area.

Thank you to all who submitted answers to last week's trivia question.

This week's trivia question: What Mustang women's basketball head coach has had the longest tenure at SMSU?

The first person to e-mail me at MustangHoofPrints@SMSU.edu with the correct answer to this question will receive a SMSU Ag Bowl t-shirt. The winner will be announced on The Saturday Morning Mustang Show between 9-10 a.m. on 1400AM each week.
