LaVae Donn Thynes was born Dec. 30, 1931, in Storden Township, Cottonwood County, to the Engel and Mabel C. (Polzin) Thynes. LaVae was baptized at an early age and later confirmed at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Storden. LaVae received his education in the Storden Public Schools; graduating in the Class of 1949. He attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., for one year before enlisting in the United States Navy in March of 1951. On Aug. 22, 1952, LaVae was united in marriage to Georgina Blanch Azzopardi in Silema, Malta. This marriage was blessed with four children, Richard, JoAnn, Lynn and Mary. LaVae served his country honorably, was discharged in March of 1955 and returned to Storden. He farmed until 1967 and owned Thynes ABC Grocery in Storden from 1967-1985. In 1966, LaVae began his work for Minnesota Valley Breeders (now known as Genex, Inc.). LaVae's work allowed him to know many people and touch many lives. In July of this year, he retired from Genex, Inc.

Recently, LaVae's health had been declining. He was diagnosed with terminal cancer and was placed in hospice care on Tuesday, Nov. 24, at The Lodge on Summit Oaks in Burnsville. He passed away there, peacefully, with his family at his bedside, on Friday afternoon, Nov. 27, 2009, at the age of 77 years.

LaVae was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Storden where he served as a Sunday school teacher, a member of the Storden Fire Department; the Herbert-Reese 391 American Legion Post in Storden where he was past commander; and the Commercial Club where he was treasurer. LaVae will be remembered for many things in life, including his humor and the way in which he was able to touch so many lives; but, most of all, LaVae will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather who loved his family very much.

LaVae is survived by his wife of 57 years, Georgina of Storden, four children and their spouses, Richard (and Dianne) Thynes of Willmar; JoAnn (and Kent) Wolf of Jordan; Lynn (and John) Nelson of Eau Claire, Wis.; Mary (and John) Fischer of Marshall; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

LaVae is preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Merlyon.
