The Marshall girls hockey team used an early surge to open the season on a winning note.

Jenny Schwieger, Rachel Peters and Bridgette Louwagie provided the offense for the Tigers as they defeated New Ulm 3-2 Tuesday night in New Ulm.

"For our first game of the year, as a coaching staff, we were pleased with the way they came out," said Marshall head coach Kevin Schroeder. "We've got some new kids so we didn't know what to expect."

Among those new kids was seventh grade goalie Paige Moravetz, who played her first game and earned her first win after making 28 saves in the game.

"I thought she played well," Schroeder said. "She was obviously a little nervous with it being her first game but I thought she did very well."

Morgan Zollner and Lexi Fischer scored in the third period for New Ulm, but it wasn't enough as the Eagles remain winless with an 0-4 record.

Marshall took a 1-0 lead in the first period on Schwieger's goal at the 14:28 mark, while Louwagie and Peters scored goals just 29 seconds apart in the second period for a 3-0 Tiger lead going into the final period.

The Eagles got their offense going in the third period but the Tigers were able to build enough of a lead to earn the victory.

"You have to play hard for three periods," Schroeder said.

Marshall will continue play Saturday as hosts to a tough Orono team.

"We know Orono is a tough team," said Schroeder. "They beat New Ulm 8-0."
