SW Minnesota Jingle Bell run/walk for Arthritis Foundation is Saturday

By Cindy Votruba
POSTED: November 12, 2009

For this fundraiser, people are being asked to dress up in reindeer antlers or Santa Claus, even if there isn't snow on the ground.

The second annual Southwest Minnesota Jingle Bell 5K run/one mile walk for the Arthritis Foundation is Saturday at the Marshall Middle School. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with the run starting at 10 a.m. and the walk starting at 10:05 a.m.

Darcy Wall, one of the event's organizers, said last year's event had 75 participants.

"I think we raised over $16,000 last year," Wall said. "We're looking to beat that this year."

The money raised from the Jingle Bell run/walk goes toward the Arthritis Foundation, Wall said.

"It keeps the money flowing into research and new medications for arthritis," Wall said.

According to the Arthritis Foundation, 46 million Americans suffer from different types of arthritis. Arthritis also affects 300,000 children.

"Arthritis cost the U.S. government $128 billion annually," Wall said.

Wall, who has juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and is this year's honoree for the Jingle Bell run/walk, had two surgeries this year. One was for an elbow replacement.

"The worst part is not being able to drive with the recovery," Wall said.

Wall said food will be available before and after the run/walk

Participants are encouraged to come in festive Christmas attire, Wall said.

"We have a costume contest, people dress as an elf or Mrs. Claus," Wall said.

People can also register online through the Web site www.arthritis.org.
