Veterans Day programs lined up around area
Area communities will honor veterans on Veterans Day on Wednesday, with help from the veterans themselves.
Most of the programs will take place at local schools, and the public is welcome to attend.
Here's what's on tap in the area for Wednesday:
10 a.m. at the Adult Community Center in Marshall presented by the American Legion. Guest speaker will be John Feda. Boys and Girls Staters are expected to attend. Lunch will follow the ceremony at the American Legion.
10 a.m. at Canby High School. The local VFW will present the program. Students can attend and the band and choir will perform.
9:30 p.m. at Dawson-Boyd school presented by the American Legion and VFW. Speaker is Bruce Rodrick, chaplain at J.M. Care Center. The band and choir will perform.
2 p.m. at the Lake Benton School presented by the Lake Benton American Legion, which will present the color guard.
Speaker will be Robin Sik, whose husband, Corey, left to return to Iraq Nov. 5 after a two-week furlough. All students in preschool through sixth grade will participate, including piano students, the sixth grade band and all elementary students singing.
8:40 a.m. in the Lakeview school auditorium presented by the American Legion. Music will be presented by the band and choir. Guest speaker will be veteran Ray Pederson.
1 p.m. at the Hendricks school presented by the Ivanhoe and Hendricks VFW, Legion and Auxiliary. Speaker will be Jared Beck. All in Ivanhoe and Hendricks are welcome. Ivanhoe will not host a program because the gym is not ready yet.
8:10 a.m. at Lynd School. Students will gather at the flag pole to recite the Pledge of Allegiance and have a moment of silence. At 10:30 a.m., guest speaker Jeff Reisdorfer will address the assembly. The public is welcome.
10 a.m. at the Milroy school presented by American Legion Post 274, VFW and the Legion Auxiliary. Speaking will be Legion Commander Don Zeug and various students reading selections. The band and choir will perform.
10:30 a.m. at Minneota school presented by the Ghent American Legion, the Minneota VFW, and the Minneota Women's Auxiliary. Special speakers are scheduled. The MHS Student Council will conduct a program and the student band and choir will perform.
1 p.m. at Murray County Central High School gym presented by Chandler Ezra Barrows Post 338, Slayton VFW Post 6322 and Slayton Erwin March Post 64. Speaker will be Dennis Strassburg. The MCC choir will sing "The Star Spangled Banner." The concert band and choir will perform an Armed Forces medley.
1:30 p.m. at the RTR High School gym in Tyler presented by the American Legion A.C. Hansen Post 185. The public is welcome. Avla Enemark and her daughter, Michelle Wood, will deliver narration and vocals. The band and choir will perform.
10:30 a.m. in the Tracy Area High School gym presented by the American Legion. The choir will sing the National Anthem and the band will perform. Speaker is Cal Van Horn, past district commander. Past servicemen will be honored.
5-6:30 p.m. at Tracy American Legion Post. Veterans Day Potluck Supper.
10 a.m. in the Wabasso High School gym presented by the American Legion. Gary Revier will speak and the band and choir will perform.
10 a.m. at Westbrook High School. The band and choir will perform. Speaker will be Lt. Harry L. Baulisch, USN Ret.
2 p.m. at Walnut Grove elementary school.
11 a.m. at Yellow Medicine East gym presented by the American Legion and VFW. Keynote speaker is Patricia Vold Pepper, U.S. Navy M.D., formerly from Clarkfield. The school band and choir and the Boy Scouts will participate.
8:30 a.m. Mass on Thursday at Holy Redeemer School in Marshall is dedicated to veterans.
