Hoflock, Stoks, Jessen advance to state

Canby-Minneota-Lincoln HI's Leah Jessen and Nick Stokes and Tracy-Milroy-Balaton's Jeremy Hoflock qualified for the state cross country meet with top-10 performances at the Section 3A Meet at Adrian Country Club Thursday.

Jessen, an eighth-grader, placed fourth in the girls division with a time of 15:52.7 to earn the opportunity to go to her second state meet.

CML head coach Beth Jessen, who is also Leah Jessen's mother, said Leah Jessen has been battling some health issues lately, but was still able to come through with a strong run.

"She had kind of a tough run," Beth Jessen said. "She had a bad stomach on Tuesday and kind of collapsed after her run today, but she was very happy with how things came out."

Leah Jessen was ninth in the section last year and 49th at state and will look to improve on that at this year's state meet at St. Olaf College in Northfield Nov. 7.

Also qualifying for the state meet from CML was freshman Nick Stokes, who took ninth place in the boys division with a time of 17:45.2.

Stokes, a freshman, had to attend driver's education classes during the week, so he was unable to practice with the team leading up to the section meet. Beth Jessen said Stokes trained on his own and still ended up running a good race.

"He was really working to be in the top 10," Beth Jessen said. "That was his goal and I wasn't surprised at all. He did a really nice job."

Hoflock, a junior, was the third area runner to qualify for the state meet. He finished in seventh place with a time of 17:40.5.

TMB head coach Marie Hanson said she wasn't surprised Hoflock qualified after seeing how well he did in his first year running cross country last season.

"I knew last year that if he stuck with it he could do well and qualify," Hanson said. "In our area, I figured he'd be one of the kids right up there."

The CML girls team finished in third place, a spot out of qualifying for state. Adrian won the meet with a score of 56, Mountain Lake/Butterfield-Odin was a close second with 63 points and CML came in third with 118.

Beth Jessen said her runners were upset they didn't qualify for the state meet, but she said she thought they did about as well as they could have.

"The girls really ran well," she said. "They would have loved to be one of the top two teams and get back to state, but third was probably where we were going to place. They worked hard though, so there's nothing to be sad about."

The Lakeview girls team finished 12th with 337 points led by Carly Doom's 41st-place finish (17:36.8). Karli Tholen paced the TMB girls, who finished 13th, with a 28th-place finish (17:14.0) and Lexy Gleis was the top runner for the 14th-place Murray County Central squad with a 29th-place performance (17:15.2). Kendal Borning was the top runner for Yellow Medicine East, who didn't have enough runners for a team total. She finished the meet in 56th place (18:16.0).

Hoflock's seventh-place finish was tops for the TMB boys, who finished in seventh place with 204 points.

Hanson said she thought the TMB boys did a good job running in a tough section.

"Our goal was the top six and they got seventh," she said. "They had a good understanding of how things were going to work out. I think they ran well, but not every single runner had a great race, which is what we would have needed to be in the top five."

The Jackson County Central boys took first (49), Adrian was second (62) and Worthington came in third overall (89).

Stokes' run helped the CML boys finish ninth (223) and Joey Erickson's 27th-place finish (18:39.6) led 11th-place Murray County Central. Luke Baker paced the 17th-place Yellow Medicine East team with his time of 20:20.4. Noah Dovre took 51st place (19:39.1) running for Lakeview, which didn't have enough runners for a team.
