6 schools readying for board elections

By Jodelle Greiner
POSTED: October 27, 2009

Six area school districts are having board elections next month.

Canby, Lakeview, Lynd, M.I.L.R.O.Y. Charter and Russell-Tyler-Ruthton's elections will be Nov. 3, and the filing deadline has passed for all of them. E.C.H.O. Charter's election is Nov. 12 and there will be changes as to who can sit on the board, as mandated by new state law.

E.C.H.O. Charter has a little different set-up. The voting will be done by a mail-in system, said Lynn Kuehn, secretary of the school and an election judge.

"We mail them and they mail them back," she said. At 4 p.m. on Nov. 12, the election judges will process the ballots.

E.C.H.O. has three openings, and "state law has mandated that the teachers can no longer hold the majority on the board," Kuehn said.

Kuehn declined to release the names of those who have filed for the board openings, saying the names would be announced at the end of the filing period, which is Oct. 28.

She did say one teacher was resigning from the board and the terms of two other teachers were about to expire. Kuehn said, the state has mandated that one position must be filled by a teacher, one by a parent or guardian of a student, and the third by a community member.

"State law has mandated community members be on the board, who is not a parent," Kuehn said.

Canby's voting will run from 2-8 p.m. Nov. 3 at Canby High School's new gym. There are three openings and six have filed. Incumbent Dr. Craig Kaddatz did not seek re-election. Incumbents seeking re-election are Kari A. Harding and Alan Saltee. Other candidates are Laurie Driessen, Saundra Snobl, David Vogt, and Raymond Alu.

Lakeview has two polling places that will be open from 5-8 p.m. Nov. 3: one is the Wood Lake Community Center and the other is the Lakeview School in Cottonwood.

Lakeview also has three openings. Vying for the positions are incumbent Doug Gregorie, Al Grube, Tracy Sterner and Jason M. Louwagie. Two incumbents, Deb VanMaldeghem and Gary Geistfeld, chose to not seek re-election.

Lynd's gym is where to vote from 4-8 p.m. Nov. 3. Three positions are open on the board with three running. Incumbent Randy Kor decided to not seek re-election. Incumbents running for office are Crystal Pochardt and Michelle Williams. Greta Nelson is also running.

M.I.L.R.O.Y. Charter will have voting from 5-8 p.m. Nov. 3 at the school. There are three positions open and no incumbents have filed for re-election. With the filing deadline past, all candidates will be write-ins.

RTR has one school board, but three voting precincts and each precinct has one position open. Voting will run from 4-8 p.m. Nov. 3 at RTR's elementary school in Ruthton, at RTR's middle school in Russell and at RTR's high school in Tyler. No incumbents have filed and only one person is running in each precinct. Ruthton's candidate is Tim Madsen; Russell's is Terry Gordon; and Tyler's is Stephanie Cordes.
