CANBY - It was a repeat performance for the Canby-Minneota-Lincoln HI girls and Tracy-Milroy-Balaton boys cross country teams at the Camden Conference cross country meet in Canby Thursday.
Despite the cold and windy conditions, both teams were able to win back-to-back titles in front of faithful fans clad in winter coats, stocking hats and mittens at the Canby Community Golf Course.
The Lancer girls earned a perfect score of 15 with all five team members finishing in the top-5. Leah Jessen won the race for C-M-L despite feeling a little under the weather.
"It was cold, but I felt pretty good," Jessen said. "I came down with a little cold over the weekend, so I've been drinking lots of orange juice. But it was hard to breathe when I kept coughing. It wasn't a very good time, but it's a tougher course."
C-M-L head coach Beth Jessen said that the course was longer than usual so the times would reflect that.
"We had to steer clear of the mud and standing water," she said. "So it ended up being a longer course."
Dana Kraus finished second for the Lancers, while Erin Kamrath was third, Chelsea Deslauriers fourth and Morgan Merritt fifth.
"It was nice to get a perfect score," said Leah Jessen. "We knew we could do it, we just had to work for it. At our team meetings, we talked about wanting to win the conference. We've won it for many years in a row. It's a good tradition. We set a goal and we did it."
Karli Tholen made All-Conference after placing sixth for TMB. The top eight finishers are awarded the honor.
"I thought I did pretty good," Tholen said. "It didn't feel as cold as I thought it would be. I was expecting the course to be more hilly and uneven, but it actually wasn't all that bad. This was one of my better races lately. I like running in the cold rather than the heat. It was nice to make All-Conference."
Charly Morgan took 16th for the Panthers, while Cecilia Trejo was 17th and Haley Hebig 18th.
Bridgette Louwagie paced Lakeview with a 10th-place finish.
"It was a little cold, but I like running in the cold," said Louwagie. "The biggest challenge was coming up the hill and then going around the tree and back down the hill. It took a little extra energy. My season has been going pretty good. We have a pretty young team. We've all improved our times."
Caitlin Louwagie finished 14th for the Lakers, while Nicole Louwagie was 15th, Carly Doom 19th and Ciara Gideon 22nd. Lakeview actually tied with TMB with 61 team points, but the tiebreaking sixth runner for the Lakers, who was Laura Olson, finished ahead of TMB.
MACCRAY/Renville County West senior Taylor Bodin won the boys race, while TMB's Jeremy Hoflock came in second.
"I had a goal in mind for time-wise and place-wise and I accomplished that," said Hoflock. "I always set a goal for myself. I was happy with my race. Taylor is a good runner and I couldn't quite catch him."
Hoflock and C-M-L's Nick Stoks ran stride for stride for most of the competition.
"I broke away from Stoks around the final 0.2 miles down along the stretch," Hoflock said. "He's a really good runner, but I just pulled away around the last corner. He stayed strong the whole race and really pushed me to finish higher."
Stoks took third for the Lancers.
"I did not run good," said Stoks. "I haven't been feeling the best lately. I have an ankle that hasn't been doing well either and it really irritated me (Thursday). I was hoping to do better. I had a lot of pressure on myself because I thought I could take first."
Bodin, Hoflock and Stoks were all within five seconds of each other at the Adrian Dragon Invitational.
"I've been with Bodin all season and I wanted to take first," Stoks said. "I always wish I could do better, but I can't complain about my season. This is my worst race. I haven't been disappointed with any of my other races. Now my goal is to go after everyone at sections."
TMB won the team title with 31 points. Joe Hook was fourth for the Panthers, while Reed Salmon took fifth. Andrew Vroman finished 10th and Jesse Miller rounded out the team scoring with a 12th place finish.
"It's nice to win back-to-back titles," said Hoflock. "I'm happy with my second-place finish, but our main goal was to win the conference as a team. I'm really excited for sections. I want to make it to state this year. Hopefully I can make the top-10 and do that."
The Lancers took second place with 40 points. Luke Jessen made All-Conference with a seventh-place finish, while Ted Berckes came in ninth. Levi Citrowske took 11th, Wyatt Johansen came in 14th and Michael Schmidt was 15th.
"Everyone was disappointed we didn't win the team title," said Stoks. "But I reminded everyone that we're a young team and we're not losing anybody this season. It wasn't a great race for any of us, so let's just go get them next week and next year."
Lakeview's Noah Dovre also made All-Conference with his eighth-place finish. The Lakers also got a 13th place finish from Randy Louwagie.
"I was sick about two weeks ago, but I hadn't gotten rid of it and back to my time yet till now," said Dovre. "The hardest part of the race was coming up that hill and back down again. There's a hill immediately after that and you feel exhausted. My best time this year was 18:06. I'm going to try and beat my section time from last year. If I do that, I'll be happy."
Ricki Kallhoff won the JV girls race for the Lancers, while Morgan Crowser was second. Judy Trejo took third for TMB.
In the boys JV race, Eddie Anderson took first for the Panthers.
