SLAYTON - Murray County Central had two All-Conference performers in the Red Rock Conference Cross Country Meet Monday in Slayton.

MCC junior Shuyler Canfield finished in a three-way tie for eighth place with a time of 19:46 and junior Lexy Gleis took 10th in the girls division with a time of 17:25.

In the four-team boys division, Adrian had the top four runners and had a team total of 19 points to finish in first place. Mountain Lake-Butterfield-Odin and Hills-Beaver Creek/Edgerton/Ellsworth both finished with 63 points, but the tiebreaker went to MLBO because its sixth-place runner finished with a faster time.

Murray County Central finished fourth as a team, but Canfield said he was pleased with how the Rebels ran against stiff competition.

"I think the guys pushed themselves fairly well today and tried their best," Canfield said. "We got fourth, but I think we still ran well."

Joey Erickson finished in 14th place for the Rebels with a time of 19:45. Isaac Harsmen was 21st, Devin Ryan took 23rd, Zach Leebens finished 25th, Davis VanderWal was 33rd and Kyle Thompson finished 34th to round out the top seven MCC runners.

Adrian had the top three runners in the girls division and won the team title with 27 points. MLBO finished second with 37 points and HBCEE was third with a score of 66.

MCC didn't have enough runners to take part in the team competition. Jamie Schnoor, Suzie Buesing and Mirjam Reichard competed for the Rebels along with Gleis and were 30th, 31st and 32nd, respectively.

MCC head coach Dominick Damm said many of his runners had only competed in junior varsity races earlier in the season, but the conference meet combined junior varsity and varsity runners. Still, he said he thought his runners, all of whom are juniors or younger, did well.

Although only a couple of Rebels finished in the top 10, Damm said having his team compete against Adrian and some of the other elite runners in the conference will only help them in the future.

"For being a small conference, we definitely have some pretty decent teams," Damm said. "It makes us better running against them."

Now MCC will prepare for the Section 3A Cross Country Meet Oct. 29. The meet will be held in Adrian, where the Rebels have competed twice already this season.

The top 10 individual runners and top two teams at the section meet qualify for state, and Damm said he thinks Gleis and Canfield have a shot to extend their season.

"I'm hoping to have a couple runners make state, but a lot of the best runners at state come out of this section, so it's not an easy task," he said.
