The Marshall girls finished in third place and the boys fourth at the Adrian Dragon Invitational Tuesday.

With 92 individual girls and 12 teams in the competition, Adrian won the girls varsity with 67 points, while Mountain Lake/Butterfield-Odin was second with 71. The Tigers were third with 90.

"The highlight for us was that the girls shined," said MHS head coach Mike Jacobs. "They finished ahead of Canby for the first time and in front of all the conference opponents. Canby had a girl drop out, but we still would have beaten them had she factored in where she normally did. We had an outstanding race."

The Lancers girls team finished in sixth, while Lakeview was 12th. Leah Jessen took fourth (15:48.70) for Canby, while Dana Kraus was 12th (16:22.70).

Haley VanKeulen and Jessie Hubley broke into the top-10 with a ninth (16:19.80) and 10th place (16:20.50) finish for MHS. Becca Fedde was 17th with a 16:35.20.

"We have two weeks before sections," Jacobs said. "With some serious work, it's looking pretty good for them."

Jocelyn Wenker, Sydney Prorok and Kelli VanLeeuwe all had a good race according to Jacobs.

"Sydney finished 1:01 behind our top runner," he said. "She's stepping it up. Joci's stepping it up and Kelli had the best run of the season for herself. They've all kind of surged forward. I think there was only one Canby girl ahead of them. They're on the move and have progressively gotten better."

Karli Tholen was the top runner for Tracy-Milroy-Balaton, while Bridgette Louwagie led Lakeview. Murray County Central's Lexy Gleis finished in 14th (16:26).

On the boys side, Jackson County Central won the meet with 65 points. MHS was fourth after compiling 128 points.

Grant VanKeulen was sixth for the Tigers in the time of 17:29.30. Chad DeAustin finished 12th in 17:56.

"We had quite a bit of an improvement from last year," said Jacobs. "The really telling thing is that Grant had an 18:30 last year and Chad took off two minutes from his time from last year. We have two eighth-graders that are now factoring in times like we had from others last season. We've seen a lot of growth."

Luke Sanders, Andrew Bell and Wade DeAustin all finished in the top-50 for the Tigers.

"The hills are long at the Adrian Golf Course," Jacobs said. "They're not steep, but they're just long and that makes it a challenging course. For them to drop time and move up two places as a team from last year is an encouragement."

Nick Stoks placed eighth for Canby in 17:39.40, while TMB's Jeremy Hoflock was right behind in ninth (17:43.40). Schuyler Canfield finished in 14th (18:09.30) for MCC.

Noah Dovre was Lakeview's top finisher (19:14.90), while Luke Baker led the way for Yellow Medicine East.
