Mustang Hoofprints

September 10, 2009
Chris Hmielewski

What a great kick-off to the 2009 Mustang Football season. The Ag Bowl was successful through the hard work of our SMSU staff and the support of the Marshall community. We had over 3,000 people attend the 3rd Annual Ag Bowl and the home opener for the Mustang football team this past Saturday. Thank you to all who attended and made it a great family and college football environment.

The fun does not stop. On Saturday, the Marshall Radio Station proudly presents the 4th annual Mustang Shootout at Shooter's Sporting Clays east of Marshall beginning with registration and the duck flurry at 9 a.m. At 10:30 a.m., Steve and Nate Petersen have set up 14 stations for the teams shoot 100 birds, taking a lunch break after the first seven stations and continuing after lunch with the final seven stations.

We welcome teams of four to come out and join us for a fun day of shooting while supporting the SMSU Mustangs. To register for the event you can log on to smsumustangs.com, click on the special events button and select the Mustang Shootout logo.

Following the Mustang Shootout, the SMSU Football team will be hosting the defending NCAA champion and No. 9-ranked University of Minnesota-Duluth for the annual Shrine Bowl and Military Appreciation Day. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. at Mattke Field in the Regional Event Center. It's UMD's first visit to Marshall since the 2002 season and the game also marks the first time ever SMSU has played a team ranked in the Top 10 of NCAA Division II.

SMSU is 2-0 on the season, 1-0 NSIC, after recording a 48-10 win over Minnesota-Crookston in the season opener and a 55-10 victory over Black Hills State Saturday.

The SMSU Soccer team (0-1-0, 0-0-0 NSIC) will travel to Sioux Falls, S.D., this weekend to take part in the Northern Sun Festival. The Mustangs will meet up with Winona State on Friday at 6 p.m. and Minnesota-Duluth on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The No. 12 SMSU volleyball team (6-2, 0-0 NSIC) will travel to St. Paul this weekend for the Radisson-Roseville/Concordia University-St. Paul Tournament. The Mustangs will play four matches in two days, taking on Bemidji State, Minnesota-Duluth, Augustana and Dowling (NY).

SMSU opens the tournament on Friday at 9:30 a.m. against BSU, followed by a 5 p.m. contest with UMD. On Saturday, the Mustangs will square off against Augustana at 10 a.m. and Dowling College at 7 p.m.

The Mustang women's golf team will compete in the Augustana Invite this Saturday and Sunday in Sioux Falls. The tournament will be played at the Bakker Crossing Golf Club and it will be the first competition of the fall season for the Mustangs.

For more information on the Mustang Shootout and all SMSU Athletic Department and Mustang Booster Club activities, go to SMSUmustangs.com. I look forward to seeing you this Saturday!

Good luck to all of our Mustang Teams this weekend. Go Mustangs!

Congratulations to Jim Ratekin, who provided the correct answer to this week's Mustang Hoofprints Trivia Question: Which SMSU Athletic teams qualified for NCAA post-season play during 2008-09 athletic seasons? Jim emailed in the correct six Mustang teams that qualified for NCAA post season play in 2008-09: SMSU Volleyball, Men's Basketball, Women's Golf, Wrestling, Softball and Baseball.

Thank you to all who submitted answers to last week's trivia question.
