With the fans' first look at the Southwest Minnesota State University soccer team, the Mustangs showed some promise as the regular season edges closer.
The Mustangs hosted Dakota Weleyan (S.D.) in the first exhibition game of the season Saturday at the Regional Event Center, and after trailing for most of the second half, SMSU freshman Maggy Rouse scored on a header off a free kick from Tatum Borstad in the 81st minute to tie the game at 1-all.
The score remained the same as the game ended in a 1-all tie.
Kendra Olchefske made six saves in net for the Mustangs, allowing just one goal late in the first half.
Kate Voigt couldn't find the back of the net after sailing three shots on goal, while COurtney McCarthy and Rouse each had two.
SMSU will continue preseason play Wednesday when the Mustangs host Augsburg at 6 p.m. at the REC.
