Community fair kicks off in conjunction with 125th

By Cindy Votruba
POSTED: August 22, 2009

There might only be a few members left of the Wood Lake Community Club, but the group strives to put on a good show for the annual community fair.

The community fair, along with the town's 125th anniversary celebration, starts Monday and runs through Wednesday.

One of the fair's events is a medallion hunt beginning 8 a.m. Monday, said Club member DeWayne Schaffran. The community club will post clues daily at the post office and the community center.

Margery Cunningham and Betty Hinz are putting together a build-your-own-museum in the community center. Schaffran said people can bring in Wood Lake memorabilia, starting Monday afternoon.

"Anything that is related to Wood Lake," Schaffran said. "I've got posters from the Bullhead festival."

Cunningham said they will also hang photos of graduating classes from the Wood Lake School.

"That's always of interest, to see what people looked like years ago," Cunningham said.

Other events include watermelon and pie eating contests and the cutest pet contest, Schaffran said.

Schaffran said there won't be an all-school reunion of the Wood Lake School, but classes were invited to have a reunion during the anniversary.

"We sent letters out to one person out of each class," Schaffran said.

The class of 1969 will have its reunion Monday at the community center, starting at 3 p.m. The classes of 1967 and 1968 will have their reunion after the parade Wednesday at the beer garden, and the class of 1956 will have its celebration at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the community center.

Schaffran said commemorative plates of Wood Lake will also be available.

"I had some plates made of the gazebo, the school and the (Wood Lake carousel) signs," Schaffran said.
