County talks LGA, library
By Rae KrugerLyon County Commissioners don't want to levy the amount the county will lose in local government aid, county commissioner Mark Goodenow and county administrator Loren Stomberg said this week.
Stomberg had prepared a preliminary budget for the general fund and highway department fund for 2010 that included about a 3.8 percent increase for the council to consider at Tuesday's meeting. The increase includes levying about $150,000 to recapture what is expected to be lost in LGA for 2010, Stomberg said.
"We're not going to levy back the LGA cuts," Goodenow said this week. "We could, but that's a one-time thing. What would we do after that?"
Marshall City Administrator Ben Martig gave the board a presentation on the proposed new Marshall-Lyon County Library.
Stomberg said Martig's presentation was similar to the one he gave at the July city council meeting.
Martig's presentation included possible financing options to cover a gap between what's been raised or pledged to the project and what remains to cover the cost of the proposed $5 million library.
"The board really didn't have much discussion on it," Stomberg said of the library presentation.
"There really wasn't even a lot of questions," Goodenow said.
The board did discuss a $5 million Department of Energy grant to install wind turbines and related items at the landfill, Stomberg said.
"We would have to match that grant dollar-for-dollar," Stomberg said.
The board will not pursue the grant, Stomberg said.
The board also received an update on the progress of the jail project.
An open house has been set for Aug. 27.
Sherry Ristau of the Southwest Initiative Foundation updated the board on the Foundation's work and made a formal funding request.
The board did not act on that request Tuesday, Stomberg said.
In other business:
Steve Strautz and David Sturrock of the Marshall Area Chamber of Commerce's Transportation Committee updated the board on the committee's progress.
The board approved an electronic waste recycling contract with CRT Processing LLC.
