It's fair time again

There's plenty to do this weekend at the Yellow Medicine County Fair, both in the grandstands and in the barns.

"The newest and biggest attraction is the Quad Freestyle," said Rob Hauger, YMC Fair Board president.

The freestyle will feature 4-wheelers jumping ramps at 7 p.m. Thursday in the grand stand. Hauger expects about seven riders will take part.

The demolition derbies are back, he said.

The car derby is set for 7 p.m. Friday at the grand stand.

"Expecting a pretty good turnout for that," Hauger said.

The combines will clash at 7 p.m. Saturday in the grandstand.

"Lot of excitement for the crowd with the big hits," Hauger said.

Both derbies have been popular for a few years, he said.

For those more inclined to nature, the University of Minnesota Raptor Center and Bramble Zoo will have exhibits, he said.

All American Amusements will set up a new midway. "Good selection of rides," Hauger said.

For those of a musical bend, several free shows are set.

"Nona Fay will perform Gospel and country music on Thursday," he said.

"Peter and Paul and the Wendinger Band are set for Friday. We had them back because of so many requests from last year," Hauger said.

The Melody Kings will perform Saturday and the Great Pretenders will take the stage at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Of course, the 4-H will be a strong presence at the fair, as it has been for years, said Michelle Molden Ascheman, coordinator of the 4-H County Program. There will be a wide variety of animals being exhibited, but some other fun activities have been set, as well.

A Round Robin Showmanship and Animal Jeopardy is "a game show for the kids to learn about animals," she said.

The 4-H Olympics is set for 3 p.m. Sunday.

The 4-H Fashion Show is back at 1 p.m. Saturday.

You can take home some goodies from the 4-H Food Stand Leftovers Auction, which is set for 4 p.m. Sunday.

"All of the 4-H is the biggest draw," said Molden Ascheman. "Families come to see families and livestock. The youth are available to talk in the barns."
