It’s polka time again in Seaforth

POSTED: July 16, 2009

Whether you're a polka fan or not, there will be a good times ahead in Seaforth this weekend. Polka Fest is returning with a lineup of both old-time and country and rock music.

The fun is all for a good cause, too, say organizers - proceeds from festival events will go toward projects like the community's new playground equipment.

"When people are at the tractor pull for kids, they'll be able to see the new playground equipment," said Maureen Bernardy, one of Polka Fest's organizers. Since it opened in June, Bernardy said the playground has been a popular spot for local kids. "Most times there's kids there, more than there were in the past."

The festival in "the nation's smallest polka town" will be continuing to offer two different styles of music in different locations Friday and Saturday evening, Bernardy said. Live polka music including acts like Dain's Dutchmen and the Larry Olsen Band of Lake Benton will be offered at the community shelter, while karaoke and dance music from Knight Excitement of Redwood Falls and Marshall band Screaming Cactus will play near the Seaforth fire hall.

Lots of familiar activities will also be returning, like a beanbag tournament and the kids' pedal tractor pull. A total of eight local teams will be facing off in the Polka Fest softball tournament, and a catered chicken supper will be offered at the Seaforth Legion Hall on Saturday.

"We're trying something different," Bernardy said. "Last year we had a pork supper, and this year, we thought we'd try chicken."

Buying a Polka Fest button for $7 will grant visitors admission for both Friday and Saturday, organizers said, and save money. (Admission at the gate will be $8 for Friday or $14 for both days.) Buttons are available at the Seaforth Tavern, Vesta Bar, Fuhr Insurance in Redwood Falls, Baune Insurance or the Meadowland fertilizer division in Wabasso until Friday at noon.
