MACS spring musical is this week
By Jodelle GreinerMarshall Area Christian School will present its spring musical, "The Pirates of the I Don't Care-ibbean" in three performances this week.
A matinee for Holy Redeemer School and Boulder Estates is set for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. Other performances are set for 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday in MACS' gym.
Appearing in the show will be 67 students.
Music teacher Gerri Carter said she was online looking at one of the Christian music Web sites when she discovered the musical.
"It was brand-new and I knew the kids are all excited about pirates," she said.
She and the other teachers watched the show and approved it.
"The story message is that we're not supposed to be counting our treasures here on earth, but saving for our treasures in heaven," Carter said. "Which means we want to get the message of God out and bring all our friends and loved ones with us."
The story involves a girl named Andy who's at a baseball game when she gets hit on the head. She wakes up in Johnny Bay with a bunch of pirates who have forgotten who they are and what they are.
"They think their treasure is whatever the captain says it is, like toys," Carter said, adding the captain is the devil.
"There are lots of colorful pirates - and a parrot," Carter said.
The cast includes Briatta Buntjer as Andy; Daniel Harrison as Andy's dad; Jacob Falconer as Capt. Jack; Ben Evans as the parrot; and Theresa Hanson, Amy Harrison and Jonah Bader as pirates, as well as a full choir.
Carter and Jennie Hulsizer, MACS drama coach, got a lot of help to put on this play.
"Lots of parent volunteers who helped with the set and stage," Carter said. "It's a really outstanding set this year.
"It's going to be a wonderful evening of song and dance."
