Stina Leiseth, a junior at Yellow Medicine East High School, was killed in a car crash Wednesday in rural Granite Falls.

Leiseth, 16, was killed after the vehicle she was driving rolled into a stream at about 3 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of 90th Street S.E. and 20th Ave. S.E. north of Granite Falls, a story in the West Central Tribune said Friday.

A news release from Chippewa County did not immediately identify the driver in the crash, which is under investigation, the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office said.

YME Principal Karen Norell said Leiseth was a good kid who was active in the school community.

"She was a terrific kid," said Norell. "She was very active, a great scholar and a three-sport athlete. She belongs to Rock Haven Church where she was very active.

"She had a good circle of friends and they hung tight together," Norell added. "She was upbeat and positive, quiet but friendly."

Leiseth was a member of the YME volleyball team, girls basketball and track team.

Ryan Bremmer, YME girls basketball coach, said Leiseth was a good student and friend to everyone.

"She was a top-of-the-line student, probably one of our best," said Bremmer. "She was a very hard worker."

Bremmer said Leiseth was a good athlete who has played on the varsity team since she was a sophomore.

"She was the most coachable kid you would want to have," said Bremmer. "She was hard working and would do anything. She was a great team player. Really a friend to everyone."

Bremmer said he learned about the accident after Leiseth failed to show up for a team practice.

"We were going to have practice and Stina didn't show up," said Bremmer.

Norell said counselors and other community members were scheduled to be on hand for counseling Friday afternoon in Granite Falls.

Norell said students gathered at Leiseth's church Wednesday evening as news spread about her death.

"Wednesday night students were with the youth pastor at Rock Haven Church and they were with their families yesterday," said Norell.

"You hold tight to your kids, and that's what you have to do," added Norell.

Leiseth was recently named by the Independent to the second team All-Area Volleyball Team.

Leiseth also played on the Southwest Minnesota Juniors, a Junior Olympic volleyball team out of Marshall, the West Central Tribune said.

Funeral services for Leiseth will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Granite Falls High School Gymnasium. Burial will be at the Granite Falls City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. Sunday at the Granite Falls High School Gymnasium.
