The fall sports season at SMSU has come to an end. Mustang Volleyball had its best season ever at the NCAA Division II level as they finished up 28-6 overall, second in the NSIC and ranked in the top 25 national poll all season. The Mustangs were ranked as high as No. 3 and finished out the season ranked No. 7.
Mustang Football finished with a 6-5 overall record, the first winning record in nine years. The season was highlighted by a win over conference rival Winona State. The Mustangs ended the season with wins over Northern State and Minnesota State Moorhead. The SMSU football team ended the season in the top half of the NSIC, finishing 6th.
The SMSU Soccer team concluded their season with a 3-14-0 record. The Mustangs ended the season with a two-game winning streak, with victories over Minnesota Crookston and Minnesota State Moorhead.
Last Thursday, Associate Head Football Coach and Defensive Coordinator, Tim Steinbach joined the crew at Mike's Caf at 6 a.m. for a question and answer session. I am happy to report that the first SMSU Coach's Forum was very informative. Dave Drown provided the entire group a great overall history lesson on SMSU and the athletic department.
We were fortunate to have Bill Ziegenhagen at our table who graciously read Ronnie's question to Tim, right from last week's hoofprints article, to get the discussion started. Tim brought a five-year statistical analysis of the Mustang defense and shared it with the group. It was a morning filled with great Mustang tradition, history and a lot of laughter.
I will say, you must walk in Mike's with thick skin because you do not get a chance to even sit down before the ribbing begins.
I am working on scheduling another coach's forum for Dec. and this one promises to be as good as the first. Thank you to the Mike's early morning crew for all their support.
