Fish House parade is this weekend in Hendricks
By Robert Wolfington IIIThanksgiving is over, time to decorate the house and get it ready for the holidays.
Not your home, but your fish house.
The annual Hendricks Fish House parade is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, giving people a chance to show off their creativity in decorating their fish house - and maybe even catch up with Santa Claus.
Tom Olson, one of the event's coordinators, said the parade brings a lot of fun to the community.
"It's open to all holiday-type floats," said Olson.
"We try to make it fun, we have some crazy things going on with it."
Olson said the parade kicks off at 1 p.m. and usually draws in a few dozen entries.
"We line up at Christ Lutheran Church at 12:30 p.m. and usually we have between 20 and 30 entries in it. As we parade through downtown we have an announcer that gives people an entrance with some local flavor."
The parade is led by local royalty, Olson said, and is followed up with a special guest.
"The parade is led by Ole and Lena from our Syttende Mai celebration in May," said Olson. "They're Ole and Lena for the year, so we have them leading the parade, and on the tail end Santa Claus follows.
"Kids will get a chance to sit on his lap and tell him what they want for Christmas."
Olson said the fish houses often have a holiday theme.
"People usually decorate with a Christmas flavor," said Olson. "Once the parade is done they'll display them on Main Street.
"They'll serve something like chili or other food. It's kind of like an open house for fish houses."
There is no pre-registration for fish houses, Olson said.
"Just show up at 12:30 at Christ Lutheran Church," said Olson.
