DAWSON - The Lakeview volleyball team captured the Camden Conference north title outright after a 3-0 win over Dawson-Boyd Tuesday night.
The Lakers, ranked No. 10 in Class A, move to 17-2-2 (8-2 Camden) on the season, while D-B drops to 1-16.
"We wanted to come out and take care of business tonight," Lakeview head coach Phil Lalim said. "We were able the seal the Camden north championship with this win. We wanted to make a statement tonight that said how much we wanted it."
Both offensively and defensively, the Lakers controlled most of the match. Lalim said he felt that the entire team deserved credit for the win.
"I thought our hitting stood out," said Lalim. "But that also means that our passing and our setting were consistent then too. I thought we struggled with serving early on. But that's the easiest thing to fix at this point in the season. I was pleased that everyone did their jobs."
In Game 1, the Lakers stormed out to a 6-0 lead. Dana Boerboom had a kill and an ace block in the run, while Alissa Ricke earned an ace serve. Camille Doom hammered a kill down to give Lakeview a 12-3 edge.
Kristen Lee's ace block brought D-B to 15-9. But the Lakers quickly took a 20-12 lead, with Boerboom contributing four kills in the stretch.
After Lakeview's Kayla Golberg pounded down a kill from the outside, a Blackjack hitting error closed out the game 25-13.
Boerboom finished the match with 13 kills, while Doom had nine and Golberg five.
"We were kept on defense most of the night," D-B head coach Nichole Swenson said. "Their middles did a nice job. They were very aggressive and could go all over the court. They kept us off-balance. We tried to pull a blocker off the net to help with defense, but it was just a little too late."
Danielle Strand came up with 11 digs for the Blackjacks, while Janelle Baldwin and Kelsi Schuelke each had seven.
Lakeview jumped out to a 5-1 lead in Game 2 after Golberg earned a kill. With the score 8-3, the Blackjacks went on a 4-0 run to get within one point.
But the Lakers stepped it up a notch and surged ahead 14-7. Lee's ace block set the score at 18-9, while Kelsey Lindblad found an open spot on the Laker court for 20-11. At 23-13, the Blackjacks got on a roll and scored three straight points. Ashley Schmitt had an ace serve during that run, while Kelsey Jurgenson earned a kill. A D-B hitting error and then a Boerboom kill finished off the second game 25-16.
Jurgenson tallied six kills in the match, while Lindblad had five. Lee added four ace blocks.
In Game 3, Kelsey Helgeson earned an ace serve to put Lakeview up 4-1. After an ace serve from Boerboom, an ace block from Chelsey Gniffke put the Lakers ahead 8-2.
At 11-4, D-B went on a 6-1 run to force a 13-10 score. Strand came up with two ace serves in the stretch, while Jurgenson earned an ace tip and Lee a kill.
Gniffke, Doom and Golberg each spiked one to the floor to help Lakeview take a 18-12 lead. Despite Jurgenson's kill in the middle for the Blackjacks, Doom put down two kills to help the Laker's end the match 25-17.
Gniffke contributed 28 set assists for the Lakers in the match.
"She's a good leader for us," Lalim said. "We know on the second hit, she'll be there. Chelsey is also a good hitter, so that really changes the dimension of our team when she can get up and spike the ball on the second hit. She's a good blocker too."
Boerboom was 17-for-18 behind the serving line with four aces, while Ricke was 16-for-17 with an ace. Bahn was 11-for-12 with an ace and had nine digs. Also, Morgan Wee had six digs.
For D-B, Schmitt went 13-for-13 and had two aces, while Kuhlmann was 6-for-6. Baldwin added 15 set assists.
In the B-Squad match, Lakeview won 3-0.
Next up, Lakeview hosts Sleepy Eye Saint Mary's on Thursday and then head to Pipestone for an 8-team tournament Saturday, while D-B competes in the Subway Classic Friday and Saturday in Marshall.
